Funded Requests

All of the requests on this page are from specific individuals, families or organizations. One of the core values of HYH is that only the individuals themselves know what they want or need and that it is critical to take the time to ask them. When you fund an Individual Request, you are providing something that not only the individual, family or organization needs but you are also supporting another HYH core value which is that immigrants, migrants and refugees should feel valued, respected and appreciated. Basically, your support is saying, “we love you and the fact that you are here!”

Money Requested for Elderly and Sick Family in Mexico

Antonio has been in America for 16 years working at various jobs, most recently in the hemp farming industry in Vermont and before that on dairy farms in Vermont for 5 years. He regularly sends money to his mother, grandmother and grandfather in Mexico. He sends $100 monthly for food and more for medication.

The family has diabetes and heart problems and require medications regularly. When the pandemic hit, Antonio was laid off from his job. He starts a new job in a week. Since he has been laid off, he has not been able to send money home and will need to wait two weeks before he receives a paycheck from the new job. Antonio is very worried about his family, particularly his grandfather who requires several medications. Funding this request would help tide this family over until Antonio can start sending money again.

Bunk Bed & Mattresses

Soyla recently broke the Domestic Violence cycle and is ready for new opportunities. Soyla recently received DV support and now is happy to have a place of her own. Soyla must start from the bottom when it comes to getting basic household items.

Soyla is asking for a bunk bed and mattresses to give her kids a dignifying place to sleep. These past few years have been difficult for the whole family and giving them a comfortable bed would help this family adapt to this new chapter in their life. Soyla is working, but due to the vast number of items she needs this assistance would be highly appreciated. This bunk bed would be her 13-year-old daughter and 8-year-old daughter. Soyla has a 5-year-old son also but due to space is only requesting a bunk bed and mattress. Now being a Domestic Violence survivor, this has given Soyla the strength to keep moving forward and just needs a little help to get back on her feet.

10 Binders

When refugees come to the U.S., they bring with them important documents from overseas, and upon arrival, they are inundated with more papers and mail from public benefits offices, doctors, school along with regular junk mail. For those without English – the majority—keeping track of key documents and providing them when needed is challenging. Papers are lost or misplaced.

Staff time is lost too. A solution emerged when one of our recent Burmese arrivals came with their own binder with plastic inserts containing their important documents. Staff recognized how this simple tool is the solution to this nagging problem, a problem that could result in the delay of critical supports. With this request, we look forward to helping our next 10 refugee families stay organized and more involved in their resettlement process. Jewish Family and Community Services runs many programs for refugees and vulnerable immigrants living in Pittsburgh. Our professional team, assisted by interns, AmeriCorps and volunteers, help families transition to their new American home.

Bicycle Set Up (Bike, lock, helmet)

William has recently settled in Auburn, AL. He was not allowed to enroll in school because he is 17 years old. Fortunately, he is able to attend free ESL classes one night a week.

One of the teachers assists with transportation because his sponsor does not have any access to transportation, and there is no public transportation in Auburn. Although he has a home and access to ESL classes, he is lacking transportation other than one night a week when he attends class. Having a bike will provide William the independence to travel around town on his own and more easily access shopping centers, parks, the public library, or the supermarket. Unaccompanied children served by Catholic Charities Atlanta are children who cross our borders and have no parent or legal guardian who is available to provide for their care and physical custody. Whiteboard & Easel

Our new Congolese refugee women’s group just started up in a community room at their apartment complex. The women, most of whom are not literate in their own language, meet weekly with our MSW student intern and community volunteers to build literacy and knowledge about life in America. This easy to erase, free-standing Whiteboard will make demonstrating letters and numbers a whole lot easier.

We will find endless uses for this valuable teaching tool. Jewish Family and Community Services runs many programs for refugees and vulnerable immigrants living in Pittsburgh. We cherish the interns and volunteers that assist our professional team with helping transition new families to their new American home.
